Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya’s glaciers occupy the high-elevation peaks near 5,000 m and are small in area (only a few square kilometers collectively) and in rapid decline. Historical maps show much larger ice cover in the early 20th century; the remaining ice fields and valley glaciers have thinned and fragmented. These tropical glaciers are highly vulnerable: reduced accumulation, higher temperatures, and increased ablation have driven shrinkage, and several small ice bodies have disappeared entirely. Their loss affects alpine ecosystems and serves as a visible indicator of warming in equatorial high mountains.
