Bara Shigri Glacier

Bara Shigri Glacier is the largest glacier in Himachal Pradesh, India, located in the Chandra Valley of the Lahaul and Spiti region; its length is about 30–35 km (estimates vary with measurement), and it forms a major ice reservoir in the western Himalaya. Recent studies indicate that Bara Shigri has undergone retreat and thinning since the late 20th century, particularly at its snout, consistent with broader Himalayan glacier retreat driven by rising summer temperatures and changes in snowfall. The glacier remains an important freshwater source for downstream rivers, and its retreat has implications for seasonal water availability.
