Pasterze Glacier

Pasterze Glacier is the largest glacier in Austria, located on the Grossglockner massif in the Hohe Tauern National Park. Its length has historically been several kilometers but it has retreated substantially over the 20th and 21st centuries; the glacier has lost much of its former area and volume. Long-term monitoring shows pronounced thinning and retreat tied to rising summer temperatures and lower mass balance. Pasterze is often cited in European studies as an example of alpine glacier retreat and the loss of ice volume that reduces long-term freshwater storage in mountain regions.
