Fox Glacier

Fox Glacier (Te Moeka o Tuawe) on New Zealand’s South Island is a temperate valley glacier that descends from the Southern Alps into rainforest. Historically tens of kilometers long when fed by larger icefields, it has retreated substantially in recent decades and undergone marked thinning. Like Franz Josef, Fox is highly responsive to short-term climatic swings; recent decades have shown net retreat driven by warmer summers and changes in snowfall. Its rapid changes have had impacts on tourism safety, access routes, and local hydrology.
