Biafo Glacier lies in the Karakoram range of northern Pakistan and is one of the world’s longest mountain glaciers outside the polar regions, stretching about 63 km. It sits in Gilgit–Baltistan and connects with the Hispar Glacier via the Hispar Pass to form a continuous ice corridor. Although the Karakoram shows more complex and regionally variable glacier behavior than many other mountain ranges (some glaciers are stable or even advancing), observations indicate Biafo has experienced thinning and retreat in parts of its length, especially near its termini, and is sensitive to changes in temperature and precipitation that affect accumulation and melt.
